I was scrolling through TikTok the other day, well, mostly because my body had decided that moving any more than my thumb was a no-go for the afternoon. I was researching whether or not you can make a passive income with chronic illness, and I got hit with another one of those ads. You know the ones. A polished 22-year-old standing in front of a white wall, telling me that I’m basically an idiot for not making $10,000 a month through passive income.
“It only takes an hour a day!” they chirped. “I work from the beach! You just need this one secret course!”
I looked at my unwashed hair, the pile of heat packs next to me, and the brain fog that made it hard to remember what I’d had for breakfast, and I felt that familiar, sharp sting of failure. Because when you’re living life in hard mode, dealing with chronic illness, trauma, or a nervous system that’s constantly on high alert, these easy solutions don’t feel like opportunities. They feel like a personal insult. They make you feel like you’re failing at a game where the rules weren’t written for people with bodies that glitch.
The truth? Passive income with chronic illness is possible, but it sure as hell isn’t what the gurus are selling you. It’s not a magic button. It’s not an hour a day to a million dollars. It’s a slow, messy, sometimes frustrating process of building something that eventually gives you back a little bit of your life.

The “Big Lie” of the One-Hour Work Day
Let’s get one thing straight: the passive income world is full of shit.
I remember diving into the world of affiliate marketing and digital products when I first realised my old way of working just wasn’t going to happen anymore. I watched videos that promised me the world. They said all I had to do was promote products online and I’d be a millionaire by Christmas.
What they didn’t tell me was that most of those accounts were fake. They weren’t selling products; they were selling the idea of selling products. It was a loop of misleading courses and Master Resell Rights (MRR) that felt more like a pyramid scheme than a business. It felt like I was being asked to sell my soul for a quick buck, and honestly? I didn’t have the energy for that.
When you have a chronic illness, your bullshit detector is usually pretty high because you’ve spent years being gaslit by doctors and told to just think positive by well-meaning relatives. So, seeing these ads that promise $10k months with zero effort? It’s just more gaslighting. It ignores the reality of set-up time, the steep learning curve, and the constant need for promotion.
Building a source of income while navigating passive income with chronic illness isn’t about working less; it’s about working differently. It’s about front-loading the work when you have the spoons so that you can rest when you don’t.

What “Passive” Actually Looks Like When Your Body Glitches
Is anything ever 100% passive? Bloody no.
You still have to make the thing. You have to design the digital product, upload it to your website, set up the link in your bio, manage your Etsy shop, or create your storefront. You have to figure out the tech (which is a nightmare during a brain fog flare). And most importantly, you have to promote it.
If you build it, they will not just come. You have to show up, even if showing up just means posting a reel from your bed or writing a blog post over three days because you can only handle twenty minutes of screen time at a once.
Passive in our world means that once the initial mountain of work is climbed, the system does the heavy lifting for you. It means that while you are sleeping off a migraine or spending the day at a specialist appointment, someone, somewhere, can click a link and buy your work.
It’s easier on the body than a 9-5 grind because you aren’t trading your hourly presence for a paycheque. You’re trading your ideas and your creativity. But getting those orders to start rolling in? That takes time, persistence, and a lot of trial and error. It’s not a sprint, it’s a very slow, very deliberate crawl.
The Energy Budget: Why I Don’t Set Deadlines
One of the fastest ways to flare your symptoms is to give yourself a rigid deadline for a side hustle.
When I’m creating a new digital product, like my 60 Second Nervous System Reset Cards, I follow one golden rule: I only create what I would actually use.
If a product doesn’t resonate with me, if it doesn’t solve a problem I’ve personally struggled with in my journey through trauma and chronic illness, then I’m not making it. My audience, you, can smell fake positivity from a mile away. You don’t want to be told to manifest abundance while you’re struggling to afford your meds. You want tools that acknowledge that life is hard, that healing is messy, and that sometimes, just getting through the next sixty seconds is a win.
Because my energy is limited, I have to be ruthless with my Energy Budget. If I’m working on a larger project, like a course or an e-book, I refuse to put a launch date on it.
I work when I can. I rest when I must.
My success is slower than the people on TikTok. And that is okay. I am building a long-term, sustainable income that respects my physical boundaries. If I push through a flare to hit an arbitrary deadline, I’m just going to end up in bed for a week, unable to do anything. That’s not a business, that’s just another form of self-harm.

The Emotional Win: More Than Just a Paycheque
We talk about the money because, well, the bills don’t stop just because your health did. But there is a deeper reason why passive income with chronic illness matters so much.
When you live with invisible illnesses like Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS), Functional Neurological Disorder (FND), or the aftermath of trauma, you lose so much of your independence. You become dependent on doctors, on partners, on parents, and on government benefits.
Being on government benefits is exhausting. The paperwork, the constant need to prove you’re still sick, the tiny amount of money that barely covers the basics, it wears away at your soul. It makes you feel like you’re just a file number, a burden on the system.
Having even a small, steady flow of income from your own creations? It’s a game-changer for your self-worth. It’s the feeling of knowing that you can provide for your kids, or buy that one luxury item that makes your life easier, without having to ask for permission or wait for a direct deposit from the government.
It makes you feel like you mean something. Like you are more than your diagnosis. You are a creator, a business owner, an entrepreneur. You are someone who has taken the shards of a broken life and turned them into something that helps other people. That emotional win? That’s worth more than any $10k month.
Reclaiming Your Shine (The Soft, Steady Kind)
Healing isn’t about fixing yourself so you can go back to being the person you were before. That person is gone, and that’s okay. This new version of you, the one who knows the value of a low-pain day and the importance of a regulated nervous system, is incredibly powerful.
If you’re looking for a way to start, don’t look at the gurus. Look at your own life. What have you learned? What tools have helped you survive the hard mode of your own existence? Those are the things worth sharing.
You don’t need to be on all the time. You don’t need to sell your soul. You just need to take one tiny, sustainable step at a time. Maybe that step is just getting your nervous system into a place where you can think clearly for ten minutes.
That’s why I created the 60 Second Nervous System Reset Cards. They aren’t about high vibes, they’re about survival and finding a moment of peace when the world (and your body) feels like it’s falling apart. They’re the same tools I use when I’m trying to build this business from my couch.
